A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson is the harrowing first-person account of one mother's struggle to survive after she and her children are attacked in their home and captured by Native Americans during the winter of 1675. Set against the backdrop of King Philip's War, Mary Rowlandson offers a compelling, detailed, and often gruesome account of the assault upon her Massachusetts village, the habits and customs of the Native Peoples with whom she lived for 11 weeks, her own meeting with King Philip himself, and her eventual redemption and freedom.

First published in 1682, Mary Rowlandson's memoir was read widely in the American colonies and in England. It was reissued four times in its first year of publication and is widely considered to be America's first best seller.

Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs Mary Rowlandson (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Rowlandson Wendy Rich Stetson Spoken Realms Books

I found this book to be very interesting as I am a descendant of a person taken as a captive in 1704 who was taken to Canada. The difference between my ancestor and Mary Rowlandson is the fact that my ancestor chose to remain in Canada, married there and raised her family. This narrative gives a good idea of the treatment of some of the captives, and gives insight to the rational behind a lot of the taking of captives during this period of time. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the French and Indian Wars.

Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs Mary Rowlandson (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Rowlandson Wendy Rich Stetson Spoken Realms Books Reviews

In this story a woman is held in slavery for a few weeks by "Heathen Indians", her trials and tribulations are shared in her own words. to really put the story of slavery into prospective read "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself" {Harriet Ann Jacobs (Author)}. I found that reading the two works in close proximity gives a wider prospective than either alone.
It wasn't bad but didn't offer Any thing new to the knowledge I had. Sometimes confusing, the point was understood with patience
The kindle edition was excellent. This is an important account of the suffering of an English captive during the King Philips war in 17th century New England. A very compelling story and well worth reading.
The book is a little hard to follow due to the old way of speaking but the messages are very clear. I would recommend this book to anyone who is spiritual and believes in God. Highly recommend for those that are struggling with their belief.
The profoundly disturbing and culturally interesting narrative should be read by everyone. I do not hold Rowlandson's religious views, nor her views of Native Americans, but I do not blame her either. I find it shameful that she is not more well known and that she seemingly did not write anything else in her lifetime. Although, I am glad she saw no more reason to for her sake.
I read this in two days. It's the historical account of a young mother's capture by Indians. Unlike other documented kidnappings she felt it wiser not to try and escape. The Indians viewed her as a slave and were more interested in ransoming her than hurting her. She felt she would be safer to accomodate their plans. She gives a very detailed account of her situation. It is graphic and sometimes very gruesome. But she tells the whole story. Where she was mistreated she says so, but she also recounts the acts of kindnesses that she experience. Great reading for all.
This personal story of Mrs. Rowlandson's experience with Native Americans more than 400 years ago is fascinating. Her village attacked, many settlers slain, she is captured with her wounded child, and marched into the wilderness. She links her story to Biblical verses which sustained her through the ordeal. This book is great for history buffs, as well as those looking for inspirational writings. Additionally, the reader gets an immediate sense of the precarious situation of indigenous peoples, who were being pushed off their abundant hunting grounds.
