The Hired Man 9781408817667 Books

This is a beautiful, haunting book that simmers and promises that there is a deep, dark secret just around the corner. It is set in modern day Croatia, among villagers who have suffered war but never speak of it. The book was compelling, well-written, characters were outstanding in their depth and interest. I read it in two sittings only because I had to go somewhere! Couldn't wait to find out how it would end.

This book is not a thriller, but it almost feels like one. It is full of secrets, memories, and lots of history that will entertain and inform. It is very human, and a very spot-on look at how ordinary people behave in terrible times.

The scenes are both eerie and ordinary. The setting is gorgeous (but haunted by its terrible past) and the narrator is completely believable.

Very good book club choice.

Parents and Teachers: The book is definitely adult. Various adult themes are mentioned - divorce, prostitution, adultery. Sexual incidents are described, not in much detail. Teen hijinks and sexual discovery. Wartime mayhem and suffering. Some swearing, mostly crude references to male body parts.

The Hired Man 9781408817667 Books Reviews

The Hired Man offers a close and unique look at the effects of war crimes on a small community in Croatia. Artfully constructed!
A strong main character who has many complex relationships not only with those in the present but also with those in his memories. The sense to me as a reader is that vengeance will occur when the opportune time arises.
A really good read. Gets to the heart of the damage done when people lose trust in their fellow human beings.
Artfully written story of war, recovery and the privilege that blinds those of us who have never experienced either. Characters are memorable and Duro a hero.on many levels, keeping hope alive as he distributes acts of kindness unrecognized. I will read more Forma!
Think of a workman, skilled in his craft, a little weary with the familiarity of his work but with the knowledge that a steady pace will get the job done. This is the tempo of Duro's storytelling and it reflects so wonderfully how he works through not only the jobs to be done on the blue house, but the memories that the process conjures up. The rhythmic tread takes us on a journey that leaves the reader as bemused by Laura's absolute blindness in what she sees in front of her, as by the refusal of Gost's inhabitants to acknowledge what has already happened. Aminatta Forna has touched on one the of the most tragic events in recent history while skilfully incorporating the ridiculous perspective that so much of the western world had on the events that took place, forgetting the very deep scars that still ravage so many families and communities. A wonderful read.
Read this book on the way to Croatia. The story of how war affects people, and how they learn to live with it.

Reading this book made the trip more interesting. If you go to Dubrovnik, try to take the cable car to the top of the mountain and see the HOmeland Museum account of the war. It helps explain things.
Not all authors have a gift for superb writing, character building and a good story. Aminatta Forna has all 3. She draws you in, keeps you in. The writing is beautiful and I will put this one on my do not lend shelf, so I may read again one day. A treasure.
The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna is a haunting tale that you know from the first few pages is a book you want to read slowly so as to savor it. Set in the small town of Gost, Croatia, this relatively quick read is a story about the sorrows and tragedies of the aftermath of war and the power of perseverance in spite of it all.

When an English family buys a rundown home in Duro Kolak’s hometown, the local man is compelled to offer them his handyman services. As he gets to know the family, including the wistful mom, surly teenage son, and bright and inquisitive daughter, Duro finds himself remembering the past in vivid detail. Told through alternating time frames – present day and Duro’s flashbacks -The Hired Man takes the reader on a journey through Duro’s life and the complex relationships between those in a small, war-torn town in the process of recovering, where one action can reverberate for decades to come.

Because it’s a small town, it comes as no surprise that Duro knows about the house he is sprucing up,  but as the story unravels the reader is brought into a world that is as interconnected as it is fragile. It is during this unraveling  that the reader learns that Duro’s actions, although kind, are not necessarily altruistic.

The Hired Man is a book meant to be absorbed, rather than just read, and with the turning of each page, a new layer is revealed. The only thing about the book that I found difficult was that the flashbacks aren’t clearly delineated in the ebook version and, although it’s fairly easy to pick up on the changes, it caused some confusion in the beginning. Other than that, it’s a great and solemn read about personal sorrow, regret, and how these emotions are impacted by living in a town in the midst of recovery.
